Notice of Data Privacy Incident
On April 20, 2023, Lake Granbury Medical Center (LGMC) learned that two storage boxes containing medical records were stolen from a locked warehouse used by its records storage vendor Vital Records Control (VRC) on April 15, 2023. According to VRC, two individuals illegally forced entry into the storage facility by driving a van into the locked bay door then stole several items located in the facility, including two storage boxes belonging to LGMC. The incident was captured on video by VRC’s internal and external security cameras. As soon as VRC learned about the burglary, they notified law enforcement.
As of June 16, 2023, we understand that the individuals responsible for this incident have not been identified, but the Grand Prairie and Dallas police departments are continuing to investigate this matter. VRC has taken steps to increase security measures at this warehouse and is evaluating its overall security practices. LGMC will continue to work with VRC to ensure patient information is stored as securely as possible to prevent this type of incident from occurring in the future.
The stolen records were from 2007 and 2018 and contained patients’ first and last names, demographic information, date(s) of service, insurance and billing information and clinical/treatment information. The 2007 records also contained patients’ Social Security numbers, but the stolen records did not contain any credit card information or bank information. One medical record was recovered when the van used in the incident was recovered, but the other records have not been recovered.
LGMC has sent letters to patients or their next of kin, if known, for the individuals affected by this incident and offered them credit monitoring service.
