Cold Platelets Arrive at Lake Granbury Medical Center
1/3/2022
GRANBURY, TX, – Platelets are lifesaving elements in any hospital, but these products for transfusion have a very short expiration and, once processed and tested, are only suitable for three days on a hospital shelf.
Due to the limited time, smaller hospitals were not eligible to have platelets on their shelves.
Cold stored platelets were initially only approved for military use until the FDA just recently in the past year approved this storage option for hospitals as well.
LGMC is one of the first smaller hospitals in Texas to receive cold-stored platelets from Carter Bloodcare with a shelf life of 14 days.
By having this product for our patients, we are able to provide essential blood products for cases quickly, such as GI bleeds, hemorrhages, and more.
“Lake Granbury Medical Center is proud to be leading the way in hemorrhage products for smaller community hospitals which provides essential services for our patients,” states Jeffery Manley, M.D., board-certified OB/GYN.
This blood component was also essential for LGMC to obtain its Maternal Level 2 Designation, which shows our commitment to patient safety and providing a higher level of care for our Labor and Delivery patients.
