Understanding Foot and Ankle Pain
5/26/2026
Foot and ankle pain affects people of all ages and is one of the most common reasons people seek orthopedic care. Because these structures support the full weight of the body, even minor injuries can make walking, standing, and daily activities uncomfortable. At Lakeside Physicians, orthopedic surgeons Cody Hartshorn, M.D., and Corey Mark, M.D., treat a wide range of foot and ankle problems to help patients return to comfortable, confident movement.
Ankle Instability
Ankle instability often develops after repeated sprains or a major injury. Patients may feel the ankle “giving out,” especially on uneven surfaces. Treatment may include bracing, physical therapy, or surgical ligament repair when instability becomes chronic.
Cartilage Injury
Cartilage damage in the ankle can happen after twisting injuries or repetitive impact. It often causes swelling, deep joint pain, and trouble bearing weight. Treatment ranges from physical therapy to arthroscopic surgery if needed.
Flat Feet
Flat feet occur when the arch collapses or never fully develops. Some people have no symptoms, while others develop ankle, heel, or arch pain. Supportive footwear, orthotics, and strengthening exercises are common treatments.
Fractures
Foot and ankle fractures can happen from falls, twisting injuries, or high-impact accidents. Symptoms include swelling, bruising, and difficulty walking. Treatment may involve casting, bracing, or surgical repair to ensure proper healing.
Heel Pain
Heel pain is extremely common and may be caused by overuse, inflammation, or irritation of the soft tissues. Treatments include stretching, supportive footwear, physical therapy, and activity modification.
Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar fasciitis is the most frequent cause of heel pain. It leads to sharp pain with the first steps in the morning or after periods of rest. Treatment includes stretching, physical therapy, orthotics, and sometimes injections.
Shin Splints
Shin splints occur from repeated stress on the lower leg, especially in runners or people starting new exercise routines. Rest, stretching, and proper footwear are often effective.
Sprains and Strains
Sprains affect ligaments, while strains involve muscles or tendons. These injuries can cause swelling, tenderness, and difficulty bearing weight. Treatment may include rest, ice, compression, elevation, and physical therapy.
When to See an Orthopedic Surgeon
Consider an evaluation if you experience pain lasting more than a few weeks, difficulty walking, swelling that does not improve, frequent ankle rolling, or pain that interferes with normal activities.
“Foot and ankle issues tend to get worse if ignored,” says Dr. Hartshorn. “Early evaluation helps us prevent long-term complications and keep patients active.”
Dr. Mark adds, “Most people improve with conservative treatments, but when surgery is needed, it can make a life-changing difference.”
Dr. Cody Hartshorn and Dr. Corey Mark treat all major foot and ankle conditions, including ankle instability, cartilage injury, flat feet, fractures, heel pain, plantar fasciitis, shin splints, and sprains or strains.
